When I was born, my parents lived on our family farm in
Fitzwilliam. Where my great grandparents
used to farm potatoes, my father John & his brothers Dick & Jim had
cows & pigs. My Dad’s first John Deere purchase was probably one of the biggest defining moments in our
lives, as he quickly taught my sister Heidi & me about the family
business. For over forty years he has
been working on different properties, & this year marks the tenth
anniversary of Holman Landscape Materials.

We combined our businesses last year, to Holman Contracting &
Landscape Materials, Inc. Even though my
sister & her husband Rob have closer to Concord, the capital of NH, so that
they can focus on their respective jobs (Heidi saves endangered species for Fish
& Game), they come home & help when possible. Last week during the blizzard Nemo, both were
helping plow the town of Richmond.
My daytime job from April-October is to manage the business
operations of our retail yard. Mostly,
that means taking phone orders, coordinating deliveries, create marketing,
photography & sales, & there are often special projects, bids or other
tasks that I undertake. Mom does most of
the small truck deliveries in our one ton (up to five cubic yards), & Dad
does the large ones (up to 18 cubic yards).
I drive a tractor & load clients that come for pick-ups during our
business hours: over a dozen types of mulches (cedar, spruce, pine, mixes in reds,
blacks, browns & natural), over a dozen types of stones (ledge stones &
natural stones), multiple types of sands, clay, compost & our signature
item – loam, also known as topsoil. Although
it can be quite busy early in the season, or on beautiful days & holiday
weekends, it provides me with much opportunity to work on my other jobs like my
DJ work or marketing & planning entertainment for Ed’s Crossroads (Tuesday Karaoke & Thursday Open Mic).
It’s with this love of the country, & particularly of
the farmers like Tracie’s Community Farm in Fitzwilliam, that makes me
especially proud to be emcee this weekend at one of my favorite wedding spots:
Stonewall Farm. This working farm &
education center has become a cornerstone of the region, with great events like
their maple sugaring contest, their ice cream & farm stand, & summer
& winter vacation camps. It has been
years since they have invited the vendors of our region together to promote our
services at their “Elegantly Rustic, Naturally Beautiful” venue.
I have too many memories of weddings, proms & other
special events to be able to discuss in a single blog entry. From romantic candlelit ceremonies in the
carriage house on rainy days, guitar players I amplified on the stonewall by
the vegetable fields, running dogs as ring bearers, horse drawn carriages for
bridal entrances & even an Irish themed wedding in March for the Smiths,
the daughter of one of the Stonewall employees who has been a lifelong friend,
since they owned the local Village Barn in Troy.
From the magical music of Harry Potter as
guests arrived to an outdoor ceremony to the trendy hits of today, my multiple
set-up special of only $200 for the second set-up is a popular option for this
Stonewall Farm is a magical place & I am thrilled at
welcoming many new guests to witness its splendor. I have multiple weddings
here each year & am happy to be part of the grand prize FREE Sunday wedding
($4000+ value). Come check us out this
Sunday from 1-4 PM to be eligible to win.
Delicious food, fun activities & great music as we kick-off another
